Taiwan’s First Microbiome Carnival: Academia, Industry, and Public Join Together

Microbes may be very small, but they have a big impact on human health, industry, and the environment. The 2026 Microbiome Carnival will be held on January 17–18, 2026 at Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2, 7F, Taipei. This event focuses on "Microbiome and Health" and brings together an International Forum × Industry Exhibition × Public Science Activities × Innovation Competition. It is the first time in Taiwan that academia, industry, and the public join in one large event, chaired by Professor Ming-Shiang Wu, Dean of National Taiwan University College of Medicine.

The Carnival is not only an exhibition, but also a movement for everyone. Scholars, companies, the public, and students will all find something meaningful, and together show the strength of Taiwan's microbiome research and industry.

Academic Frontier × International Forum

The forum will welcome world experts Prof. Rob Knight, UC San Diego and Prof. Peer Bork, EMBL. They will join 50 Taiwanese scholars in 12 themed sessions. Topics include AI and big data, probiotics, infant and child nutrition, agriculture and livestock, ocean and environment, clinical translation, and industry regulations. It will be a rare chance for Taiwanese researchers to connect directly with global leaders and showcase Taiwan's research achievements.

Industry Exhibition × Innovation Competition

The exhibition is divided into the Medical and Academic Services Zone and the Public and Application Market Zone. It will display precision testing, research reagents, probiotic products, agricultural solutions, and health brands, showing the complete Taiwan microbiome industry chain.

Another highlight is the Microbiome Innovation Competition, with prizes worth more than 1 million TWD. Startup teams will present new solutions and meet with companies and investors, creating opportunities for innovation to move into the market and showcasing Taiwan's industry-academia collaboration.

Public Science × Learning Portfolio

The Carnival also has two interactive science zones:

  • Life Zone: Designed by professors from Mackay Medical College, I-Shou University, E-DA Hospital, and National Sun Yat-sen University College of Medicine. Visitors can enjoy puzzles, short films, and DIY microbe badges to learn how microbes influence food, environment, and our bodies.
  • Lab Zone: Designed by Chishin Biotech, with five checkpoints. Participants can put on a lab coat, learn what bacteria are, tell good microbes from bad ones, understand mold and transmission, and learn the importance of cleaning. After finishing, they get a "Little Scientist Certificate."

There will also be 6 public science talks, such as "Information War – Listening to the Bacteria and How They Listen to Us" and "Gut Microbes and Our Body Code," using simple and interesting ways to help everyone explore the microbial world.

These activities are not only fun for families, but also very useful for students as learning portfolio materials. The organizers will provide a "Learning Portfolio Guide" to help high school and college students prepare reports and reflections, making science participation a highlight for school applications.
