Did you know that microorganisms are everywhere around us and even inside our bodies?
Scientists have found that there are about 40 trillion microorganisms living on and inside the human body—more than the number of our own cells! They live on our skin, in our mouths, in our intestines, and even in the air and soil, quietly supporting life systems. For example, in the stomachs of cows and sheep, fiber-digesting bacteria break down the cellulose in grass into energy. In the soil, nitrogen-fixing bacteria change nitrogen from the air into nutrients that plants can use, helping crops grow strong. And on our dining tables, the taste and nutrition of yogurt, kimchi, and miso all come from the amazing work of microorganisms.
The Growth of Taiwan's Microbiology Research and Industry
In the past decade, Taiwan's microbiology research and applications have made great progress, from basic science to industrial uses, with many achievements.
The most familiar example is probiotic products. From helping the gut keep a healthy balance of bacteria, to improving immunity and digestion, probiotics have already become a popular choice for health. In addition, Taiwan's research teams are actively applying microbiology technology in environmental protection, agricultural improvement, disease diagnosis, and precision medicine, showing strong international competitiveness.
Even more exciting, Taiwan is not just a user of microbiology applications, but is becoming an important voice in global research and industry. Through international cooperation projects and cross-disciplinary exchanges, Taiwan's scientists and companies are working together to promote this "microscopic revolution," influencing the world.
Taiwan's First Microbiome and Health Expo|Microbiome Carnival
To help more people discover the value and wonder of microorganisms, the Asia Microbiome Conference, which will celebrate its 10th year in 2026, is being upgraded to the Microbiome Carnival. For the first time, it will feature the Microbiome and Health theme, becoming Taiwan's first large-scale event focused on microorganisms.
Date: January 17–18, 2026 (Saturday–Sunday)
Location: Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 2, 7F
The event combines four highlights that make it the most important annual event in Asia's microbiome field:
There will be 12 special sessions and 50 top speakers, covering topics from microbiome data and AI analysis, infant microbiome development, human and marine microbiomes, to product regulations and industry–academic cooperation—all in one place.
A Knowledge Party for Everyone
The Microbiome and Health Expo is not only for experts—it is an event for everyone!
- Science Game Challenge
Parents and children can join fun and easy-to-understand games to learn about the fascinating connection between humans and microorganisms. - Microbial Product Innovation Contest
Show your creativity by turning microbiome applications into real ideas. You might even present your work on stage and connect with experts from research and industry.
More exciting activities will be announced soon—stay tuned!
Step Into the Microscopic World
Microorganisms may be tiny, but they have the power to change the world.
This carnival will take you on a journey to see how humans, the environment, and microorganisms live in harmony, and you may discover that your connection with these small forms of life is deeper than you think.
